Work Area

Ecommerce Platforms

We build ecommerce platforms that do more than display products: the catalog, basket, payment, order handling, and the links to stock and delivery that keep them in step. We help you choose the right foundation first, then build on it.

At a glance

What we build

We build the whole system that lets you sell online: a catalog, a basket, payment, order handling, and links to stock and delivery.

In practice

The store, and everything behind it

We build the software and connections that let a business sell online: product listings, basket and checkout, payment, order management, and links to stock, delivery, and accounting.

The visible store is only part of the work. After a customer pays, someone must pick the item, send it, tell the customer, update stock, and record the sale. Platforms that connect these steps save staff hours every day.

The right amount of building depends on how ordinary your selling is. Many stores need no custom parts. Some, with unusual products or prices, do.

What it looks like

The store front and the engine behind it

A platform is more than a shop window.

What happens after someone clicks Pay

A good platform handles the work after payment automatically.

What happens after someone clicks Pay

A sequence of 5 steps. Payment is confirmed: The provider approves it and the order is recorded.; Stock is updated: The item is reserved, and low stock is flagged.; The order is packed and sent: Staff or a partner receives a pick list and labels.; The customer is told: Confirmation and tracking arrive by email.; The sale is recorded: Accounting and reports are updated..

Choosing a foundation

Which foundation suits you?

There are three ways to build a store. Each suits different needs.

How unusual is your selling?

Choose this when

Your products and prices are fairly standard, and you want to launch soon.

What you get
A store on a service such as Shopify, with themes, payments, and apps ready.
Keep in mind
You work within the platform's rules, and pay monthly fees.
Ask about a hosted store

A typical example

Specialty goods sold with live stock

A typical case is a seller of specialty goods who takes orders by email and phone, and keeps stock in a spreadsheet. Orders are sometimes taken for items that have sold out.

A platform could show live stock, take payment at order time, and send each order to the packing list. Staff would stop re-typing orders, and customers would receive tracking by email.

Common questions

Questions about ecommerce platforms

Should we build custom or use a hosted platform?

Start with a hosted or open platform unless your selling is unusual. Custom work is best kept for the parts that set you apart.

Can the store connect to our stock and accounting?

Yes. Most platforms can be connected, and we plan the connections so each sale is recorded once.

Can we move from our current store?

Yes. We move products, customers, and order history, and keep the addresses that matter.
